Privacy at ALA 2010 Annual Conference
On the heels of a successful first-annual Choose Privacy Week, ALA’s Intellectual Freedom Committee and Committee on Legislation will present “Privacy, Libraries, and the Law” — a panel featuring three of today’s foremost privacy experts in the country.
The program will address the current state of privacy law, including the USA PATRIOT Act; how social networking websites (especially Facebook) are changing our understanding of privacy; and new threats to privacy including data mining and data brokers. Panelists will include:
- Leslie Harris, President and CEO of the Center of Democracy and Technology
- Lillie Coney, Associate Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and Coordinator of the Privacy Coalition, and EPIC project
- Anne Klinefelter, Director of the Law Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Martin Garnar (moderator), chair of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee, and Reference Services Librarian and Associate Professor of Library Science at Regis University in Denver, CO
